Top 10 Highest Grossing Worldwide Bollywood Movies

The Hindi film industry “Bollywood” is the world’s largest film production center. The first feature film (silent black-and-white) produced in India was the “Raja Harishchandra” produced by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. With the passage of time, the industry expanded and the number of films produced.

From the 1960s, the industry achieved major commercial success more regularly, and the revenue earned multiplied manifold; The 1975 film ‘Sholay’ earned triple the amount that the previous record-holder 1960s Mughal-e-Azam earned, while Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) more than quadrupled Sholay’s record. Post the “dark phase” of the 1980s, business increased tremendously as is visible from the major success of films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.

Initially, the success of a film was determined by box office longevity than revenue. However, due to increasing competition from television and the threat of piracy, and later the advent of alternative media, longevity of films decreased drastically and revenue became the focus of success.

Below is a list of top ten highest grossing worldwide Bollywood movies of all time. Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (released in 1994) was the first Bollywood film to cross INR 1 billion (US$15 million) worldwide.

1. PK (Peekay)

Budget 85 c, Gross: 626* c, India: 470 c, Overseas: 156 c
PK is all set to create history by entering the 300 crore club by the end of its 3rd Sunday run. PK,  so far, has collected 326 crores nett at the Domestic Box Office, which takes its Gross total to 470c. And on the overseas front, the movie has earned 156 c gross, that takes its Worldwide gross business to 626 crores at the Box Office. The film stars Aamir Khan in the title role, with Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, and Sanjay Dutt in supporting roles.

The film opened in 22 international markets during its opening weekend and grossed $28.7 million placing at #3 at the worldwide box office behind The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Gone with the Bullets. In North America, the film set an opening weekend record with $3.75 million (previously held by Dhoom 3) placing at #10 at the box office.

2. Dhoom 3: Back in Action

Budget 1.5 billion (US$23 million) Gross- 542c,      India: 372c,       Overseas: 170c
Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Dhoom 3 is breaking all records in India and overseas. Dhoom 3 became the highest grossing Bollywood film in India and around the world by collecting over 533 cr (US$85 million) worldwide in just two weeks. The film beat the INR3.95 billion (US$60 million) record set by Chennai Express according to Box Office India.

Superhero science fiction film Krrish 3 became the 7th highest grossing worldwide bollywood movie with worldwide gross INR 374 crore. The film which released in 2013, is produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan. It is the third film in the Krrish series following Koi… Mil Gaya (2003) and Krrish (2006). The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra, and Kangna Ranaut in the lead roles.

8. Bang Bang!

Budget-145c,       Gross: 341c,        India: 181.03c,      Overseas: 79c
The 2014 Bollywood action thriller film “Bang Bang!” became the 8th highest grossing Bollywood film. It’s directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Fox Star Studios. The film is an official remake of the Hollywood film Knight and Day and features Hrithik Roshan andKatrina Kaif in the lead roles performed by Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz respectively in the original.

9. Ek Tha Tiger

Budget- 75c,      Gross- 320c,      India: 263c,      Overseas: 57c
Ek Tha Tiger is 9th amongst Highest grossing Bollywood movies and collected around INR320 crore (US$47 million) worldwide. It’s a romantic action thriller film, directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films. It stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles and Ranvir Shorey, Girish Karnad, Roshan Seth and Gavie Chahal in supporting roles.

10. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Budget- 50c,      Gross- 311c,      India: 253c,     Overseas: 58c
The 10th highest grossing Bollywood film worldwide at the end of the year 2013. The film collected INR 311 crore worldwide. It’s a 2013 Indian coming-of-age romantic comedy film, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The most important secret behind the huge success of YJHD is that the Bollywood legend Madhuri Dixit appears in an item number titled “Ghagra” .(Watch Ghagra).

11. Dabangg 2

Budget- 60c,     Gross- 265c,       India: 211c,      Overseas: 54c.
The 11th biggest Worldwide grosser in the history of Hindi film industry. Dabangg 2 is a 2012 Bollywood action comedy directed and produced by Arbaaz Khan. It’s a sequel to the 2010 film Dabangg. The story is set in the city of Kanpur. The film features Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha reprising their roles from the previous film.

2015 Met Gala: See the Good, the Bad & the Kardashians on the Red Carpet!

The Super Bowl of fashion is here!

No, not the Oscars ... the annual Met Gala, where only the most stylish stars show off some killer couture on the red carpet.

The theme of this year's event is China: Through the Looking Glass, emphasizing how the country's fashion has influenced style around the world. Jennifer Lawrence, Gong Li ("Memoirs of a Geisha"), Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, Wendi Murdoch, and Vogue's Anna Wintour all serve as co-chairs for this year's big night.

J-Law was one of the first to hit the red carpet, wearing a poppy-covered Dior dress that showed off a hint of her tight tummy. The "Hunger Games" star wore her hair up and sported a pink lip for the event. 

Sarah Jessica Parker arrived shortly after, going all out with the drama by wearing a show-stopping headpiece from Philip Treacy. As for her equally-dramatic dress, she reportedly designed it herself with the help of H&M.

Kendall Jenner was gorgeous in green, showing some serious side-boob in the lace-up frock from Calvin Klein ... while Beyonce showed even more skin in a glittery gown that barely covered all her lady bits.

Sister Kim Kardashian put her booty on display in this one-of-a-kind design from Roberto Cavalli. Between the sheer material to the feathers and exposed back, we barely noticed Kanye West in this photo!

The reality TV star has some a long way from her disastrous pregnancy look back in 2013. 

Miley Cyrus, Zoe Kravitz and Cara Delevingne all went punk/goth with their looks.

The three all wore black and silver. The "Wrecking Ball" singer stunned in a studded-dress with cutouts around her hips, while Lenny Kravitz's daughter also showed some skin in a see-through chain mail dress with studded embellishments.

Hard to believe it's been a full year since Beyonce's sister got into a fight with Jay Z in an elevator after the 2014 event. Hopefully everyone behaves themselves this time around!

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens': Gwendoline Christie's Character Revealed

Revealed via Vanity Fair, Phasma — who wears a uniform that looks like a cross between a Stormtrooper and a droid — was confirmed to be played by Game of Thrones's Gwendoline Christie, and will be part of the First Order, formed out of the ashes of the Galactic Empire after the events of 1983's Return of the Jedi.

The Vanity Fair piece specifically hints that Phasma might not be all bad, however: "Should we really assume that Christie’s Phasma is pure evil? In a franchise where a rakish smuggler can get the princess, a Sith Lord can be redeemed, and a stormtrooper can be a potential hero, anything can happen," the article notes.

Ahead of the release of a print issue filled with Star Wars: The Force Awakens material, Vanity Fair is offering a lot of information about the new addition to George Lucas's space fantasy series, including the name of Adam Driver's character — Kylo Ren, AKA the guy with the lightsaber that launched a million Internet comments in the first teaser — and the fact that Lupita Nyong'o's character, Maz Kanata, is a CGI-created pirate who has her own castle filled with "galactic travelers, smugglers and other assorted riffraff."

Director J.J. Abrams even jokes that fans can see yet another character from earlier movies show up unexpectedly. "I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks's bones in the desert there," director J.J. Abramsis quoted as saying. "I'm serious! Only three people will notice, but they'll love it."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released Dec. 18.

Hateful eight Updates

Quentin Tarantino threatened to cancel The Hateful Eight after an early script draft leaked online; fortunately, he didn’t follow through on that, and is now gearing up to begin shooting the western-flavored project on location in Colorado beginning next month (December 2014, at the time of writing this). We’ve been reporting on possible casting selections for the film in recent weeks, but now the movie’s official cast has been announced at last.

The majority of the project’s main cast members, as expected, are the same people who participated in a live Hateful Eight script reading earlier this year. The roster includes Tarantino’s most trusted collaborators – Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth – plus his old friends Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, and Bruce Dern. The new additions to the filmmaker’s inner-circle this round include Jennifer Jason Leigh, Channing Tatum (as we reported this morning), and The Bridge alum Demian Bichir.




Tatum, as it were, isn’t a member of the eponymous Hateful Eight; it’s rumored that his role will be a substantial one regardless. Below, we have the names of the film’s eight main players along with the respective actor who’s portraying them in Tarantino’s motion picture (as listed in the official Weinstein Company press release). We also have the characters’ nicknames, which they were identified by in the Hateful Eight theatrical teaser.

Moving on, here is the (in typical Tarantino movie fashion, fairly extensive) official synopsis for The Hateful Eight:


In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff.

Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…



Hateful Eight, judging by its description, will be part Tarantino-esque vintage western genre homage, part Agatha Christie-style single location drama/thriller, where more than one character in the story has either a secret and/or hidden intentions for being trapped at Minnie’s Haberdashery. There may well be some flat-out murder mystery genre elements at play here, which would be new territory for Tarantino to explore as a filmmaker; at the same time, though, the film’s setup brings him back to his indie roots somewhat (a la Reservoir Dogs).

If nothing else, expects lots of colorful Tarantino-style dialogue, tense exchanges, stylistic flourishes and shout-outs to classic cinema, and (no doubt) more than a little bit of bloodshed. It’s not exactly an example of an auteur re-inventing their craft, butHateful Eight is shaping up to be the sort of project that plays well to Tarantino’s strengths as an artist – and who knows, there might well be some surprises in store, along the way.

Fans of Oscar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino know that the writer/director has had a very eventful 2014 as he begins work on his newest Western, The Hateful Eight. An infamous script leak caused the auteur to consider shelving the project entirely, but he thereafter had a change of heart and is now prepping his new movie for release sometime in 2015.

The movie’s teaser trailer provided nicknames for the titular group (i.e. “The Bounty Hunter,” “The Little Man,” etc.) and it is expected that Tarantino veterans such as Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell will be reprising their roles from the successful live reading of the screenplay. We don’t know what thespians will be joining them (though Jennifer Lawrence and Viggo Mortensen are rumored), but now we’ve learned where the cast and crew will be shooting once principle photography commences.

The Denver Post is reporting that Hateful Eight will film entirely in Colorado, now that the state has provided the production with a $5 million incentive package – besting offers from Utah and Wyoming. The newspaper notes that Tarantino’s latest is the highest-profile project to shoot in the region since the 1969 version of True Grit; not only is it a landmark occasion for the state, but Hateful Eight will also undergo filming in the same place as one of the most famous westerns. That’s got to be a good omen.

With a location now selected, Tarantino will begin prep work before starting the film on December 8 at the Schmid Ranch. Earlier reports indicated that the director would get the cameras rolling in January 2015, but apparently things are moving at such a great speed that he’ll be ready a whole month early.



Since filming is slated to begin in just a couple of months, we should start to get official word on the cast sooner rather than later. As stated previously, some big names are thought to be in discussions, but it will be nice to put the rumors to rest and see who exactly will be filling out the eight roles. Tarantino is known for crafting memorable and outrageous characters, so he’ll no doubt be looking for talented actors who are up for the challenge.

Budgeted at “just” $44 million, Hateful Eight is shaping up to be a significantly smaller scale offering when compared to Tarantino’s previous efforts such as Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds. In addition to a fairly tight cast, the film will (allegedly) take place mainly in a single location – harkening back to the filmmaker’s 1992 debut, Reservoir Dogs. On paper, it sounds like a nice change of pace, in that it won’t be another sprawling revenge epic (not that there’s anything wrong with those).

Either way, Hateful Eight should be one of the must-see films of 2015. Tarantino is working in a genre he’s comfortable with and if his recent history is any indication, we could very well have a major Oscar player here. This movie is one of many arriving from respected directors in 2015; if everything meets the lofty standards Tarantino has set for himself, it’ll definitely be a contender.

The Hateful Eight will arrive in theaters sometime in 2015.
